It is the Spirit that gives life, while flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. The Spirit is what leads us to match up our words and actions to conform to the life of Christ. When we are self-centered, we don’t think beyond the present, we live for now, for our surroundings, for the world and for our wants and desires. When we live in the Spirit, we look beyond ourselves, beyond the present, beyond how we feel, and turn to God to guide us in what He wants. This is a self-sacrifice, with a motive to trust and please God. As we move forward, we come to know Jesus more personally, understanding His words and actions. The spirit of Christ is what guides us on the path of life, not just for the now, but for the eternal. Believing is the first step to following Christ, and it is a conscience action of daily prayer and faith that keeps us on that path.
